Where Does the Name Cornerstone Come from?
On February 12, 2020 by Mike Jones
The first and most important stone set in the construction of a building is called the cornerstone. Historically, the cornerstone was the major support stone for a structure which, if taken out, would cause the foundation to fail. Builders would use the cornerstone as the standard from which to take their measurements, sightings and angles for the placement and construction of the structure.
The prophet Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 28:16, “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation”. In I Peter 2:6, Peter quotes this verse in Isaiah and refers to Jesus Christ as that Cornerstone. Paul writes of Jesus in Ephesians 2:20 where he writes, “...Jesus Christ Himself being the chief Cornerstone”.
We call ourselves Cornerstone Baptist Church of Oakdale because our church, (the people, the purpose and the plan) are firmly grounded upon the foundation of our Chief Cornerstone Jesus Christ. We are resting securely on Him for our salvation, our present and continuous sanctification, and our future glorification. “He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.” (Psalm 62:2)
If you are interested in a church where Jesus Christ is the foundation and His word is held in the highest esteem, we would love to have you visit us at Cornerstone!
